THE WATER FAMINE.

(To the Editor.1)

Sir, —In connection with the "annual"' water famine. 1 should like to point out. that the merchants and others have patiently borne the loss of money and time caused by the lifls being cut off, but it would surely have been possible to permit the use of these for some short period, even once a fortnight. This would allow, at least, the accumulated heavy goods to be removed, and so save great loss and inconvenience.

It appears to me. there are two questions to be asked of the municipal authorities—First, why have the interests of the merchants, etc., been entirely overlooked, and absolutely no concession allowed them? and secondly, has the water been cut off at works in which their own interests are at stake? M strikes me forcibly, and I think, Sir, you will agree with me, that no-favour of this kind should be shown. If it was absolutely necessary to cause this trouble then all should suffer alike.— I am, etc.,

MERCHANT,
