THE FIFTH CONTINGENT.

There are now about 70 men in camp at Potter's Paddock, some thirty having- been rejected on Wednesday after the shooting test. There are plenty of applicants for the vacancies, and Colonel Banks and Captain Keid were busily engaged yesterday afternoon in putting candidates for admission to the Contingent through the riding- tests. Meanwhile the work of drilling and instructing: the men in camp Is proceeding1 steadily. Twenty-lwo horses arrived in camp yesterday, and a large number are expected shortly from the \Vaikato. The Contingent were entertained to a concert at the camp last evening by the ladies of North Shore. Mr E. L. Lees acting as director, and to-night the Onehimga ladies will treat them to a- supper and concert.

The members of the Akarana Rifle Club have presented a smoker's companion and silver match-box to Trooper Silt tie, a. member of the club, who has joined the Fourth Contingent.

A church parade of the Contingent will be held at Potter's Paddock on Sunday forenoon.

WESTPORT, this clay. Eight Westport men for the Fifth Contingent leave to-morrow, making* twenty-eight sent from here. TTMARU, this day. Dr. Thomas, Captain of the Titnaru Port Guards, goes to Wellington tomorrow to be surgeon to the Fifth Contingent.
