THREE MEN INJURED AT CALLIOPE DOCK.

A lamentable accident occurred on March 3rd at the Calliope Dock, to three workmen, engaged painting and cleaning the U.S.S. Co.'s s.s. Manapouri. A stage on which they were working broke away, owing it is said, to a djefective rope breaking. The consequence was that three out of the four men on the sta^e fell a distance of about 26 feet to the bottom of the dock, which is constructed of concrete. The names of the victims are: —Nat Western, of Duke-street, Newton, a married man with three children; .Jtohn Harris, of Victoria-street, sfingle; and John Bergman, lumper, employed on the s.s. Manapouri. Another man named Chas. Lake, of Wyndham-street, had a lucky escape. He was also working on the stage, but lie fortunately grabbed an overhanging boat hook on the vessel and swung in the air, when he was quickly pulled up by one of the crew on the s.s. Manapouri.

Harris came off worst. He was picked up unconscious and remained so up to the time he was brought to town. His tower jaw was fractured, and the medical man thought Harris was also suffering from shock. He died at the Hospital.

Western received a compound fracture of the left leg, besides a disloca,tion of the right ankle. He also was cut about the face.

Bergman was picked up stunned, but he recovered. He only received injuries to the wrist and a cut over the left eye. THE VERDICT. The jury returned the following ver-dict:—-"That the deceased, James Harris, came by his death through the collapse of a scaffold on which he was working in the Calliope Dock on March 3rd, 1900; and. further, that tile said scaffolding, not having been put up in a safe manner, the jury recommend the Harbour Board to take steps to prevent shores being used for any other purpose than that for which they are intended."

PAEROA, March 2. Last evening about 10.30 p.m. a fatal accident occurred in the Talisman mine, Karangahake, resulting in the death of a young man named Thomas Casley, aged 24. Casley and three or four others were engaged stoping, when a fall of earth took place, suddenly pinning Casley to the side of the stope, the weight of earth striking him on the neck and shoulders, whilst his head was also covered. When extricated the poor fellow was dead. DUNEDIN, March 3. A body found floating in the bay has been identified as that of William Perry, aged 62, a married man living with his family.

John Robinson, steward of the s.s. Wakatu, disappeared on the voyage between Lyttelton and Cheviot. The water was quite sriiooth, and deceased was sober. lie was about -10 years of age, and leaves a wife and four children in Lyttelton.

A man about thirty, name unknown, was found lying insensible alongside the railway near the Gore yesterday afternoon, and was brought to Invercargill Hospital, where he died two hours later. It is supposed he fell off a train.

By a fire at Toiro, near Balclutha, early yesterday morning-, four of the Children Of James Christie, farmer, lost their lives. llie servant girl had to rush but of the house, being almost suffocated by smoke. She says she had not time to save the children.

A son of Mr Frank Cress well, two or three years of age, was burnt to death in a field at Richmond yesterday afternoon. The father was burning stubble, and the child wandered to the flames, his clothes ignited, and he died. on the spot.

NEW PLYMOUTH, March 14

A young man named Harold Tennant, a letter-cai-rier at the local post office, while cycling-, came in collision with a spring trap, the horse shying. He received a severe blow from the Shaft, and was thrown heavily on to the footpath. Internal complications arose, and the poor young fellow died in the evening.
