NEWMARKET.
The ordinary meeting1 of the Newmarket Borough Council was held last evening, there being'present Mr J. McColl (the Mayor), and Crs. Laxon, Bennett, Seecombe, Smerdon, Edg* crley, Spoouer, Cast on and Laurie. Mr W. B. Booth asked to be placed on the same footing as carters in other Councils, viz., 7s per day. It was pointed out by the Mayor that ■the additional work of lighting and extingushing the lamp at the Fire Brigade she'd had been added to Mr Booth's duties, and he should receive the two shillings per week extra he asked for. After discussion it was agreed that Mr Booth's vrag'Sß remain , as, at present. Electric Tramways.—Messrs Hesketh and Richmond, solicitors, wrote re electric tramways:—"We .enclose memorandum of suggested alterations in the deed of delegation, tog-ether with categorical replies thereto, _ received from Mr Colernan, the solicitor for the promoters. Mr Colen.xan states that he trusts that the replies will be considered satisfactory and that the Council will now grant the concessions required. Y"ou will notice in the question of rent that the company decline to pay any sum as rent." The Mayor said the question of electric tramways was an important one, and lie hoped there would be a full Council to discuss the matter. It was resolved to hold a. special meeting of the Council on Monday next to consider the replies, providing Mr HesIceth could be present.
Water.—lt was agreed that seventeen tanks bf water consumed at the Epsom camp be given free. Bourke-street.—Mrs M. A. Smet!hurst wrote objecting- to the drain toeing closed up in Bourke-street, which she had the use of for nine years. Mr Smetliurst appeared and made a statement in' support. The Foreman of Works said if the drain was turned round the corner, as suggested, it would go into Eden-street ♦and the result would be "a riot." It •was resolved to refer the matter to the Stteets Committee. ~ Municipal, Association, of. New Zealand.—A request from the Association for the borough to -join^the Association was received
Melanesian Chtircli Property—lt was agreed to call for tenders for the formation of a road thrqagli the Melanesian Church property adjoining Air Laurie's factory.
