At the suggestion of the Dairy Commissioner, Sir C B. Aston, analytical chemist for the Department of Agriculture, has been testing the calibration of a quantity of the glassware used Ayith the, Babcock milk tester. In every cas_ both pipettes and test botiteSAvei'C'found to be correct.

Those, interested in the dairy industry AA-lio , fee! that the Governmentmight reasonably, and .with advantage to all concerned, exercise some sort of supervision over the testing of the niilk.&t the factories Avill be pleased to learn that the Department of Agriculture has decided to take the matter up at once. The Dairy Comm!ssioner,,.Mr Ruddick, is iioav arranging the details of a plan Avhich will provide for' tlie inspection of the apparatus and appliances in use for testing milk, and the granting of certi-ficates'when-everything is found to be satisfactory. The officer employed for carrying oh Uiis Work' Will also be able to take tests of milk at the factories as occasion may arise, and otherwise endeavour to clear up the differences which may occur between the suppliers and the management.

On this question is it believed that this work will, as a prominent dairyman has said, "support honest management and- give confidence to suppliers." Mr. R... W. D. Robertson, a present member of the dairying service, Avho lias given the subject of }hjl*c testing special study besides having had a large practical experience, •will devote a part of his time to this A\ork. Factories desiring a visit from the inspector should apply to the Dairy Commissioner, Wellington.
