COROMANDEL, Wednesday,
Mr James McGowan addressed the electors of Coromandel at Driving Creek last evening, and in the Caledonian Hall this evening. There was a large attendance at both meetings, a number of ladies being present. With regard to the Civil Service My McGowan pointed out the satisfactory state of affairs in obtaining positions in the service to the existing conditions under the Conservative Government. In his opinion he did not think it advisable just at present for New Zealand to join the Federation, as they would give more than they would receive, and quoted figures in suppprt of his views. In passing Mr McGowan referred to the Municipal Franchise Reform, the Conciliation ami Arbitration Bill, the Mining Act and amendments, and the Government Life Insurance, and remarked that no doubt accident insurance would be introduced. Mr McGowan referred to the retirement of the lion. A. J. Cadman.
