AUCKLAND MUSICAL UNION.

» There was a good attendance at the Choral Hall last evening, when the Musical Union gave their first concert of the season, under the direction of Mr Arthur Towsey. A lengthy programme was submitted, and appeared to meet with general approval, a number of encores being demanded. The Society contributed four part songs, the best of which was Stewart's "Bells of St. Michael's Towers." Mr Wilfred Manning gave a fine rendering of "The Deathless Army," and Mr Hamilton Hodges sang two solos, "The Erl King" and "Star of My Soul," with taste and feeling. He was deservedly recalled ou each occasion. Miss Anna Euge contributed two solos, "If-Love Were What the Rose Is" and "Best of All," and so pleased the audience that a recall was insisted upon after each number. Madam Laura Daw sang "When the Heart is Young" and "Going to Market," accepting a recall for the latter; and Mr Gunn contributed "The Lost Chord" and "The King's Minstrel." The instrumental numbers comprised an organ solo, "Insanae et Vanae Curae" (Haydn), by Mr Arthur Towsey, a clarionet solo, "Scena Dramatique" (Panofka), by'Mr S. Jackson; and a duet for oboe and clarionet, "Rigoletto" (Verdi), by Messrs J. and S. Jackson, with Mrs S. Jackson at the piano. The programme also included a vocal duet, "The Flight of the Swallows" (Kucken), which was prettily sung by Misses Towsey and M. White. Mr Towsey conducted tbe part songs and the piario accompaniments were played by Miss Laura Haven and Messrs Towsey and Boult
