PONSONBY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.
The Ponsonby District School Committee met last evening, Mr W. J. Rees presiding. Amongst the business done was the reading of reports from the headmasters of the several schools in the Ponsonby district with regard to home lessons. •Mr Wells, headmaster of Richmond Road School, suggested that not more than half an hour, should be devoted to home lessons, and that they should be made a source of pleasure rather than a burden and a punishment to children. Messrs C. J. Parr and Turner were appointed a committee to bring up a report with a view to the curtailment of home lessons. It was resolved to nominate Mr J. Blades to fill the vacancy on the Board of Education caused by the resignation of Mr W. Leys. Correspondence was read regarding the overcrowded state of the educational syllabus, and it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Parr, seconded by Mr A. S.Russell, (1) "That the Ponsonby School Committee begs to inform the City Schools Committee that we have already some four months past passed a resolution in favour of the abolition of standard examinations by inspectors, and we are anxious to assist in any manner in carrying this out." (2) "That the Ponsonby School Committee are of opinion that the amendment of the syllabus can best be dealt with by the .educational authorities, this committee not entirely agreeing with the recommendations of the City Schools Committee in this respect.'"
