THE MYERS CASE.

A VERDICT OF GUILTY

THREE YEARS' IMPRISONMENT.

WELLINGTON, July 4.

Mr Justice Denniston, summing up in the case of Joseph Myers, charged with forging' and uttering, said the facts proved by the prosecution were absolutely uncontradicted. It was not even suggested that the promissory notes purporting to be signed by O'Connell were actually signed by O'Connell. One point raised by the defence that accused voluntarily offered the bill to Fabian. What were his reasons for doing that? If he knew or had reason to believe, that his own cheque would not be met, it was of the greatest importance that he should also give some collateral security. The jury returned at eight o'clock with a verdict of guilty. The Crown Prosecutor said he would announce in the morning whether the Crown would proceed with the other charges against the prisoner. Sentence was accordingly deferred.

The Crown has decided to proceed with another charge ag-ainst Myers, and he is now being tried for alleged forgery of the name of Mr Skerrett, solicitor, to a cheque for £312.

WELLINGTON, July 5

The charge against Myers for alleged forgery of the name of Mr Skerrett, solicitor, to a cheque for £312, was heard yesterday afternoon. The jury, after four hours' deliberation, failed to agree, and were discharged. The solicitor for the Crown intimated that he would not <>-o any further.

In answer to a question accused attributed his position entirely to gambling transactions, which began when he was very young, and involved him in a web of difficulties from which he could never extricate himself. He was sentenced to three years' imprisonment on. each, chargre, .coo,* current. \MMmS§M£]m£m
