THE NORTH LYELL.

The new steamer North Lyell. built to the order of the North Mount Lyell Mining Company, specially for the Maciiuarrie Harbour trade, has been purchased by tlie i'nion Steamship Company. The North Lyell is 300 ft long, and 2070 lons, her depth being 1-llft and her beam 40Jft. She wus built by .Sir (!. Armstrong, Whilworth and Co., at Newcastle, England, launched a few months ago. and is dve — probably at Hobart—in about a couple of weeks. Pier engines are by \Vtgham, HicUardson, and Co., of Newcastle. Her propelling niachiuery consists of two sets of 4-erank triple-expansion engines, balanced on the Yarrow. Schlick and Tweady system, each sot driving a three-bladed bronze propeller, made of a special mixture so as to reduce the surface friction of the blades to a minimum. The boilers are-designed for a working pressure of 1801b. ami are itrrauged to work under forced draught on Howden's system. The machinery will be capable of propelling the vessel when fully loaded at a regular speed of 14 knots.
