THE KUMARA.
'On the Bth of last month there was launched by C. S. Swan and Hunter, Limited, jltr Wallsend-on-Tyne, a large finely modelled, screw steamer named the Kumara, which, has been built to the order of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, Limited, of- London. The principal dimensions of the vessel are:—Length over all, 438 ft; beam, •estceme, 54ft 3in; and depth, moulded, 32ft lOin to upper deck; and she has .been built to take Lloyd's highest class three-deck rule. Above the upper deck a shelter deck has been .fitted right fore and aft, at the' fore end of which are berthed .the crew and firemen, and at the after end provision has been made for carrying a number of steerage passengers. Accommodation'for the officers, engineers, and a few first-class passengers will be provided in large deckhouses on the shelter deck. One hold forward of the machinery space and one aft will be insulated for the carriage of frozen mutton, of which the steamer is Intended to carry the large number of 100,000 carcases. '• The machinery, which is being built by the Central Marine Engine •Works,. West HartiepboJ. will consist' of a Bet of triple expansion engines having cylinders 321 n, 54in, and 861u In diameter, .with a piston stroke 54in, steam being: generated In five single-ended boilers 15ft Cm in diameter, and 10ft (Sin long, working
at a pressure of 1801b per square inch. During construction tlie vessel has been under the superintendence of Captain MeKlrdy, the marine superintendent of the owners, .-issisted by Captain Scotland, and the machinery under that of Mr T. Young, their superintendent engineer.
