WELLINGTON NOTES .

(By Telegraph. —Own Correspondent.)

WELLINGTON, this day.

Mr Duthie, M.H.8., has written to the. Postmaster - General suggesting that, as the Vancouver mail has been discontinued, and the Suez mail leaves Sydney every Tuesday, whilst the steamers leaving Wellington on Saturday arrive at Sydney on Wednesday, an alteration should be made so as to adjust the. time-table to the requirements of New Zealand,

Mr Gilruth, chief inspector of stock, has gone on a visit to the West Coast districts of the North Island. Recently the Department of Agriculture distributed a circular to all local bodies interested in the efficient administration ■of the Dairy Act, inviting criticism. The Hutt County Council has accordingly passed a resolution declaring that if the Government undertake the entire administration Qf the Act, the cost of it should be paid out of general revenue. Mr Blow, Under-Secretary for Public Works, went South yesterday morning on an official tour of inspection. . With reference to a statement in a contemporary that new offices are to be erected for the Agricultural and Railways Departments, I learn on inquiry at headquarters that the subject has been in the air for some time past, but as yet nothing definite has been decided upon. It is proposed, however, in the near future to erect new offices for the whole of the sections of the Railway Department on the reserve' on the reclaimed land near Cable's foundry, and for the Agricultural Department on a .separate piece of land near the present telephone exchange. By this means the present sections, which are inconveniently crowded together, will all be concentrated under one roof. Ao plans have yet been drawn, but the subject will probably be brought under the attention of Parliament next session. " ~ A considerable number of candidates for the position of Marine Superintendents have sent applications, but Nothing will be done until these are examined in Cabinet. As a result of the correspondence between the Accountants Institute in Australia and that existing in New Zealand a scheme has been formulated, and how only awaits confirmation by the latter body. The proposals provide for uniformity of examinations preparatory to admittance to the Institute through-out the whole of Australia and New Zealand, by an Examination Board. This means a federation of accountants m the colonies. . . , From the returns of revenue and expenditure for the financial year endin«- March last, so..far as they have been completed; the Premier feels confident that his estimated surplus of half-«-millioti will be realised. The Governors of the Victoria College have reviewed the proposal to ask that the Gaol Buildings be. set aside for that institution in addition to the grant of a site valued at £50,000. From the innumerable requests made by Wellington of late years it deserves to be designated the cormorant of the colony. . ;,; A rumour spread through the city yesterday afternoon that a wellknown Wellington citizen had been found drowned in the harbour by the s.s. Pania. The police boat was at once sent out to search, and found a floating flour barrel near the coal hulk. It has since transpired that the citizen in question was seen by the police late the previous night, when he was in good health, Before the Chief Justice in Chambers yesterday Mr Wilford, ; on. behalf of Messrs Williamson ad Musgroye obtained an injunction to restrain Messrs Marriot, Leighton ,and Dalgleish from playing the 'Sign of the Cross' at Palmerston North.
