A NEW ENTOMOLOGICAL WORK.

■ We have received by the courtesy of the authoress a 'Handbook of Insects Injurious to Orchard and Bush Fruits,' by Eleanor A. Ormerod, F.E.S., with an exposition of the means of prevention and remedy. This is a well-print-ed and copiously illustrated work of 286 pages, including an alphabetical index, and Miss Ormerod'S position in the ranks of economic entomologists is a guarantee of the practical value and reliability of the information given. The writer's aim has been to collect info a convenient form for reference whatever is known up to the present.'time concerning the life histories and habits of insects known to be injurious to fruit trees, etc., together with notes of the remedies against them which it has been found worth while to adopt from the point of view of profit to'the orchardist. There are over sixty illustrations, and the facts stated are in great part the record of actual observations by a large army of correspondents in many parts of the World besides Great Britain, whose assistance in her labours the authoress gratefully acknowledges. The information given on the pest known as red spider (Jetranychus telarius) is especially full and interesting. Our old acquaintance the cpdjiii moth is.de^Jt with in a practical \vay, and the valu& of arsenical sprayings ih saving apples and pears from its ravages is once more emphasised on the authority of several of the Most competent economic entomologists of the world. We can confidently recommend this handbook to all horticulturists, and especially fruit growers, as practical in its arrangement and scope, accurate in statement, and handy in size. It is published by Messrs Simpkin, Marshal, Hamilton; Kent and Co. at the reasonable price of 3s 6d. -We may mention that the frontispiece is aver life-like portrait Of the authoress, from a photograph by Messrs Elliot and Fry, with a facsimile of her autograph.
