ELECTRIC LIGHTING INSTALLATION.

Our enterprising townsmen Messrs Smith and Caughey, determined to keep well in the forefront in all new improvements, have now had installed an elaborate Electric Light Installation, which covers the whole of their extensive premises, embracing tho Furniture Department in the basement, the main shops on the ground floor, and also the upper floors containing show-rooms, tea-room, offices, and Work-rooms. The fittings throughout are of superior design, s6me handsome electroliers being distributed about the place. Each department is controlled by a separate switch, easily accessible, the whole of the lighting being again controlled at the main switch and distributing boards near the dynamo. The front of the verandah is illuminated by two powerful arc lamps of 2000 c.p. each. A new room has been erected in the basement for containing the necessary machinery, which comprises a shuntwound, enclosed type dynamo, with a shunt regulator, and which has an Output of 125 amperes, at 110 volts, running at a Speed of 940 revolutions per minute, and capable of lighting 250 16 c.p. incandescent lamps. A special feature, to be noted, is the use of carbon brushes of latest design, for the collection of the current. The power is supplied by a .special Crossley Electric Light Gas Engine, capable of developing 26 B.H.P. at a speed of 250 revolutions, and which has been installed by their agents, the Auckland Gas Company. The contract for the entire work has been carried out by Messrs Seeguer, Langguth and Co., as agents for the General Electrical Company of Berlin, and the dynamo with all"material employed is -from the factory of that company. The practical'4Vork of installation was in the hands of Mr A. T. Crosher (of Messrs Crosher and Sons), and all concerned are to be congratulated on the result. The Queen-street premises were brilliantly lighted on Saturday night, and attracted general attention.
