Low also competed, and were prominent for a short, distance, but Low fell and Simson stumbled over him. It is doubtful if either of them would have been placed. Smith won handsotnelv. j though his arduous task was begin-: ning to tell. Time, Gss. The meeting was an undoubted success. The cinder t rack was in good order and fast, and the best part of ground was selected for the 100 yds and 120 yds Hurdles. The management was good up to a certain point, but there were rather too many officials, who interfered somewhat with the view of the spectators, and it was sometimes difficult to get information owing to the multiplicity of official's. The attendance' was really excellent, the takings being over £140, and it is said a considerable number found their way in without paying. In the competition for the banner for most points, Auckland, with a small but first-class team, led for most of the afternoon, but the advantage which the local team always possesses enabled Otago to eventually take the lead* and the final result was: — Points. Otago 5G Auckland 45 Canterbury 20 South Canterbury 17 Hawke's Bay 9 Wellington 1

The disqualification of. Wilson, the champion walker, was the only jarring note at the meeting. He has a 'peaqocky' style, but the public appeared to think it quite fair. Two of the judges, however (Messrs T. Kerr, an ex-champion, and J. Cross)' warned him. No exception was taken to his style in the three-mile event, and he made it clear that none of the other competitors were class enough to push him. As it turned out, his disqualification did not affect the destination of the banner, as with his win Auckland would have been two points behind Otago. G. Smith, of Auckland, was the hero of, the meeting with three firsts and one second. It is a matter for regret that in the 250 yds final there was some unintentional jostling and blocking, as otherwise the finish between Smith and Kingston would have been worth a pilgrimage. Analysing the results it will be found, that Otago, with 21 competitors, gained six firsts, five seconds, and five thirds; Auckland with five ■competitoifc secured six firsts and three seconds. Canterbury, with nine competitors, one first, ihree seconds, and five thirds; South Canterbury, with six competitors, one first, three seconds, and two thirds; Hawke's Bay, with one competitor, two firsts and one.second; Wellington, with one competitor, one third.
