WANGANUI, this day.
At the District Court, before Judge Kettle, James Henry Cooper was sentenced to four years' for indecent assault at Bulls on his step-daughter, 13 years of age. John Ferguson pleaded guilty to three charges of false pretences, and received six months for each charge. The prisoner is undergoing a sentence of 18 months for housebreaking in Auckland in November last. Samuel Northey pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to 12 months for stealing a purse and £ 15.

The Alliance Assurance Company has taken over the business of the Palatine Company, which, after seven years, has decided to withdraw from New Zealand. Nearly ninety nominations have been received for the Wellington Gun Club's Handicap! This is said to be a record for the colony. The matches will be shot at Petone on the 24th inst. Theprize-money amounts to £ 150, the first prize being £ 100.
DUNEDIN, this day.
last year the Dunedin Magistrate s Court issued 2,526 civil plaints, against 2,306 during 1897. In criminal cases heard a decrease of 191 cases is shown, the number for 1898 being 1,843, against 2,034 for the previous year.
