A LORNE-STREET SENSATION.
ATTEMPTED SUICIDE
It has been reported to the police that a man mimed John Hurley, coachbuilder, living1 in Lorne-strect, attempted io .commit, suicide this morning by cutting his throat with a razor. It appears that Hurley entered into business some months ago in Upper Queen-Street, and of late had been despondent. This morningl lie got up as usual and after breakfast Mrs Hurley thought he had set out for work. Mrs Harley then went to Kden Terrace, where she is daily engaged at work. Hurley must, have returned to the house and committed the deed, for he was discovered on the bed in his room, the door of which was securely locked. Mr (liijin, who is engaged in business with Harley. svas sent for. and he came and forced the door of the room open. Dr. Kharnian and Dr. F. \V King were both called in. It was found that Hurley's throat was gashed through to the windpipe, and the blood vessels of the neck were cut. The gash was three to four inches in length, iMarlev was ordered to be conveyed to the Hospital, he then being in a critical state.
Harley has been foreman of the Auckland Fire Mrigmle for many years, and he was also connected with Odd fellowship, being an old member of the Oood Intent Lodge. He had lived with his wife and" family in Lorne-sireel for a long period. Harley was taken to the Hospital in a cnli. accompanied by Constable 011----phant. Tlt» could not speak, so badly was his throat cut. On arrival at the Hospital Dr. Scott, of Onehungu, assisted by Dr. Xeil, dressed the wound.
