A1 the Supreme Court, to-day the ea.se of the Kcv. Smellie v. E. (!. MePherson. proprietor of the Wyndham 'Farmer,' elaiin £3.000 damages for alleged libel, is now being1 heard. The facts are thai certain charges, including untruth fulness and wrongful relent Jon of money, were laid by a seel ion of the congregation against: the minister. A Commission was appointed by the Synod to hear the charges and held an informal meeting at Wyndham, the chairman requesting thai the proceedings should not be published. The 'Farmer' published >.\ report, including the charges, which were not read, though referred to at the meeting. The defence is that the report was a fair one of the proceedings, A large number of witnesses will be examined . The case will last'several days.
