THE TOTALISATORS.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Kindly permit me through the instrumentality of your valuable columns to call attention to the fact of a seeming injustice to the sporting public, viz. : Ellerslie being the centre of attraction to lovers of horse racing, consequently here they flock, and very naturally expect to be handled as an independent public without prejudice. The totalisator being sanctioned by law as being the fairest of all betting, naturally induces the majority to patronise it. The body of the people deem it inexpedient to pay the extra amount required for the stand, some cannot afford, others consider it extravagant, a3 the case maybe, nevertheless the outsiders' sovereigns should in all conscience demand as much respect as those inside, and for which outlay they should receive " quid pro quo." An individual outside will see perhaps ten registers on an outside horse and the machine registering five hundred will by placing on another pound he can calculate to a certain extent what he will reseive, but through those inside having the overwhelming advantage of coming outside and seeing the state of tilings can go back and place their money accordingly, and thus the expected dividend is considerably withered., It is true that a glance from a distance in the straight can be had of the inside machine but the trouble is so great that it is not taken advantage of. I should like to know why equal privileges are not upheld where equal money is concerned, or providing such is impossible why not overcome the difficulty by running separate machines. — I am, etc.,

A. P. Bradly.

[We cannot see anything in our correspondent's complaint. " The investments of the inside and outside totalisators are put together and one dividend paid. The system is a good one, and does away with all confusion. At one time the Club paid separate dividends, but it was found to be unsatisfactory to the public]
