FIRE AT NORTHCOTE.
WHARF SHED BURNED DOWN,
The passenger shed on the Northcote wharf was burned down early on Sunday morning, the estimated damage being about £ 200. The alarm was given by Mr L. Davy, and a number of the residents at once turned cut and organised a bucket brigade, that being the only means of obtaining water to throw on the flames. The glare was noticed by Constables Btezar and Fitzgerald, who were on duty on the Queen-street wharf, and they at once pulled across in a boat to the scene of the fire, and rendered ■ valuable assistance in putting out the fire. The flames had secured a strong hold, however, and the shed was soon completely burned, while the decking1 of the wharf was badly damaged in places. Mr J. M. Brigham, Secretary of the Harbour Board, and Captain Duder, the Harbourmaster, arrived on the spot at about 2.30 a.m., accompanied by Mr John White, . wharf contractor, nothing- is known as to the origin of the fire, everything- being rig-ht when the last ferry steamer left the wharf. It is surmised, however, that a lighted may have lodged in some of the dry frayed timber. Several crates of strawberries in the shed were burned. There was no insurance on the shed or wharf.
