FREEMAN'S BAY RECLAMATION.

The following letter from tbe Secretary of the Auckland Gas Company was read at the meeting .of the Harbour Board yesterday afternoon :—" Referring to the agreement recently made between the Harbour Board and the Gas Company as to the deposition of earth in Freeman's Bay, I.have to inform you that my Board are advised by their solicitors that the present Avater course leading from the mouth of the se.ver to the sea-Avail must be kept open by the contractor, unless the Harbour Board are willing to open some other channel pending the construction of these Aver. I shall be greatly obliged if yoiiAvill kindly inform me Avhether it is the intention of the Harbour Board to open another channel in order that the filling in of the Bay, as far as the earth may reach, may be proceeded with in the Avay most useful to the Harbour Board. -In reference to my letter of the 3rd of August, requesting the Harbour Board to take the necessary steps to fix the permanent level of the street fronting the property of the Company, 1 have to remind you that no answer has yet reached me. You Avill readily understand that Avorks so extensive as those contemplated by the Gas Company could not be undertaken Avithout a definite street level being fixed, and as I am given to understand by the City Engineer that there is no difficulty in the Avay there, I shall be obliged to you to facilitate the fixing of the levels accordingly, in order that the acceptance of tenders due on the 23rd inst. may not require to be deferred."—The letter was referred to the Works Committee with power to act.
