PAEROA, this day.
At the Paeroa Police Court, before Messrs Forster and Nicholls, Justices, Thomas Dally was charged with assaulting W. Bowden at Paeroa on Sunday, the 24th October, and was fined 20s and costs «jevjn days. A charge of using lnsult.inpr ln.ngiiflgo ta Briwflfin preferred, against H. Dally was dismissed and costs 21s allowed. W. Graham was charged' with< assaulting James Eoley at Karangahake on Saturday, 23rd October. Three witnesses swore to the offence and four others swore that Foley struck the first blow. The Bench held that the evidence was very conflicting, but they were satisfied an assault had been committed, and ordered Graham to pay costs £3 8s and bound him over to keep the peace for three months, himself in £10 and two sureties of £5 each.
Maoris held largely attended meetings here on Friday and Saturday, visitors from Thames and. Te Aroha attending, when they decided to send a delegate to Wellington to lay before Parliament certain grievances in connection with their land, and a sum of money was collected towards defraying a delegate's expenses. Mr Fletcher, who has been in the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand for the past four years, and is severing his connection with that institution, was presented by Mr Mueller, on behalf of his many friends, with a handsome watch and chain, and by Mr Burgess, on behalf of the Bank's officials, with a tennis racket.
