ARCHBISHOP REDWOOD.
AN AUSTRALIAN INTERVIEW.
POLITICS IN NEW ZEALAND,
Referring to the arrival in Sydney of Dr. Redwood, Archbishop of Wellington, the '■' Australian Star " says :—" The object of his visit to Australia is to take part in the ceremony in connection with the completion internalfy of St. Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne. The Cathedral is now the most advanced of its size in Australia. It has only to receive a tower and other external additions, biitthese, of cbrlfse, are portions that may be added when opportunity arises, as their absence does not cause any inconvenience.- ■-■- -~..,, •■ : . "Most of the prelates of the Roman Catholic Church in Australia will probably be present, and the ceremony, which take's place on October 31st, is looked forward to as one of the most imposing and solemn ot the magnificent church gatherings yet seen in Australia. St. Patrick's Cathedral, it may be stated, has been 40 years in course of erection. Archbishop Carr has taken steps to clear off the debt, and he has been singularly successful in his efforts so far.
"When seen by a 'Star' reporter Dr. Redwood said he did not intend to make a long stay in Australia. Matters political in New Zealand are quiet, as the Se'ddon Government has secured a new lease of power, which his Grace thinks it will retain for its full term of three years, unless, of course, anything should happen to Mr Seddon, who is the strong man of the Government, and Whose retirement would mean the remodelling of the Ministry. Of course, the Opposition has returned a little stronger from the late elections, but, nevertheless, the Government retains a substantial majority. The Archbishop holds the opinion that New _ Zealand can safely embark in experimental legislation, as she can do that securely on a small scale which in some of the older and larger countries of the world would prove almost revolutionary. Hence New Zealand is regarded as the experimental example which other countries watch with a view to gain experience. Dr. Redwood is accompanied by Dr. Lenihan, Bishop of Auckland.
