THE SPRING SHOW,

The recently formed Auckland Horticultural Society, winch embraces all I°°* aociebies of the kind, with the exception of the Children's Flower Sbovr and Auckland Chrysanthemum Society, held its firsb show bo-day in the Drill Hall, the formal openand that the time is early for spring flowers, tho display is a creditable one. 1M exhibits, which number about 500, excluding a number for exhibition only, are arranged on tables, and the effect is very nrebfiy. The hall is decorated with mkau, cabbaP* tree and palm fern. In regard to the lighting, the Auckland Gas Company have supplied 34 incandescent) lamps ana patent Hollophane globes. These lamps ara arranged in clusters of three, ft large one containing three clusfcere of throe each being fixed in the centre. The effect should bo very brilliant tonight. Mr J. Henry Mackie, the popular secretary ot tno Society, deserves credit for the complete arrangements, and to-day he was assisted at the hall by the following stewards, who did good work, viz. :-Mesßrs T. F. Cheeseman, G. W. Wright, W. E. LippmbS, L. F Spooner, Wm. Thompson and D. Hay. The judges are: Messrs F. Bennett (of Messrs Bennett and Green), and Mr Allen (manager for Mr T. H. Steadman). Mr D. Goltiio, superintendent of parke, displays on behalf of She Auckland City Council a stand of beautiful cyclamens of all colours in pots, interspersed witni amaryllip. These are to bo given as prizse by the Ci&y Council. Ha also displays six dozen trusses of cinerarias, which make a prand show. Mr Soidie further exhibits eigho dozen double and single anemones. Tho double specimens ara, very fine indeed, and it ia the firsb timo tubers of the kind havo been exhibited abaahow in Auckland. These axhifcits are not for competition. i Jrofes»or Thomaa displays some lovely specimens of narcissi on a table, which are not oft with other flowors and greenery. The narciaeis are nob for competition.

An attractive stand ia that of Mra Habley, on which are artificial flowers, bub bhey look quite natural. The exhibit ia gat up in the ahape of a table decoration. Among other exhibits nob for competion are those of Messrs McDonald and Son, of Epsom, a beautiful shower bouquoß; Mrs Webster, table of flowers, truic, etc, interspersed with ciauoabis and maiden hair fern; D. Mclndoe, of Epsom, camellias ; B. Lippiatt and Sona and W. E. Lippiatb, mixed table of tree tomatoes, lemons, cucumbers, passion fruit, ate.

Thoro are only two exhibits for the feablo decorations, viz., Mrs Cheeßeman and Misß Edith Smith.

The staging was nob completed until a late hour, and the judging did nob commence until shortly before one o'clock.

Mrs C. H. Haines and Miss Street wera judges of table decorations, hand bouquets, button holes, spraya, and hand baskets. Mrs Boyd, Mr Metyard, and C. 8. McDonald, of Newmarket), also show axhibiba of flosvera, bub nob for compabition.
