HAURAKI NO. 2.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Coromandel, this day.

Ib will be remembered thab work was atopped in the shaft a few weeks ago on account of the influx of water, which became so heavy during the last few foot of sinking thab it offered a serious obstacle to the successful carrying on of the work.- A Tangye pump has since been installed, and a start was made last Monday morning to continue tho operation of sinking. The working of the Tangye is nob yet, however, all that could be desired, and it is ths opinion of tho manager thab this is attributable to tha fact thab the rose employed on the end of the hose at the bottom ot the shaft ia too large, admitting particles of grit which seriously interfere with the proper working of the .valves, thereby causing considerable loss of time and also annoyance. Ib is proposed to remedy thia by using a smaller roso, when, doubtless, everything will progress smoothly. Tho shaft has now attained a depth of over 145 feeb from tho ebrl'&CQ, and as ib is proposed to open out at the 200 feeb it ia highly important in view of the discoveries ab present being made in the neighbouring mines, that no time bo lost in getting down to the required depth.
