CHESS CONGRESS.

The following; concludes the report of tho chess tournament, won by Mr Meldrum :— Hookham v. Mackay (lluy Lopez): _ A great deal of interest was shown in this game, Mr Hookham having to either win or tie with Mr Mackay to get second. Mr Pleasants having drawn his game. White, however, made a blunder on his 21st move, thereby losing a piece, and in consequence had to resign and ta?ie third place in the championnbip. Pleasants v. Anderson (Queen's gambit declined): This waa another game which the public waa interested in, but on the 42nd move the players agreed, to draw, and so Mr Pleasants got 8_ points and second place. Mouat v. Meldrum (Guiao Pirano) : Another good game, but as Mr Meldrum only had to draw to get tho coveted first it did not attract as much attention aa the others. White eventually resigned on the 36bh move, Mr Meldruin getting ten points and the championship. The following are the final scores for tho championship :—

Meldrum, Ist prize and championship, 10 points. Pleasants, 2nd, 8_ points. Hookham, 3rd, 8 points. Barnes, 8 points ; AnderßOn, 7^ j Mouat.

7i ; Mackay, 1_ ; Lolievre, 1_ ; Pearce, 6 ; Cocks, 5_ i Sexbon, 5 ; Habherley,. <\_ ; Edwards, 3_ ; Remington, 2. Ib will be nobiced that Messrs Hookham and Barnee tied for third place, but, as the latter had left for Wellington, and was not here when called on to play, the prize was awarded to Mr Hookham.

The following is a brief chess autobiographic of the winner : Mr Meldrum, who wins tho championship, learned the game as a boy, but had not taken part in match play until the formation of the Rangitikei Chess Club, some three years ago. Since then he has played for hia Club ab almosb all their matches, and generally with success. During the last two years he has held the Club championship in both years, winning without suffering a defeat. P.e imputes his present success to avoiding practising too much with opponents over the board, preferring as practice the careful analysis of game? by recognised masters. Tho presenb is his firsb try for championship honours. Mr Meldrum has for the pasb four years practised aa a barrister and solicitor ab Hunberville. Mr Pleasants, who takes second prize, learned the moves of the game about eight yeara ago, but did not tako an active interest in the chess world until the last two years. Since then, however, he has played in the two previous champion tourneys, and improved his position every year. He was born in London, and is now 24 yoars of age. The third prize winner, Mr Hookham, is well known to all chess players, an ardent lover of bhe gamo and an exchampion. Mr Hookham also edits the chose column of the " Canterbury Times." The Rangibikei Club must be congratulated in having such a record from amongst its players.
