SCHOOLS BREAKING UP.

ST. JOHN'S COLLEGE

The annual breaking-up ceremony in connection with Sb. John's College, Tatnaki, was held yesterday afternoon. Thore was a large attendance of pupils, parents and friends, Bishop Cowie presided. The Rev. P. Smaljtield read the report upon the work of the school for the pasb year. The reporb Btabed the school is increasing in numbers. Ab the end of lasb year there were 70 boys in attendance, of whom 26 were boarders. There are now 84 boys on the roll, the boarders numbering 34. Bishop Cowie in tho course pf an address said both Mr Smallfiald and Mr Bruce were bo be congratulated on the progress thab the school had made during the past tour' years. The prizes for bhe year were presented by Mrs Cowie. The following is the prize lisb :—

The prizes won at the rocenb athletic aporbs were presented by the Rev. P. Smallfield. The 150 Yards Championship of the College was won by C. Abbott, and the Championship of the Sports by M. Fraser. Afternoon tea was provided 'at the conclusion.

A. R. Graham, who carried off bhe leading honours, is a son of the late Mr Roberb Graham. He won tho firsb prize in Form V. for divinity, and anobher handsome volume for first in Euclid ; firsb in history, firsb in spoiling, science, geography, English, French, and general proficiency. He also won bhe 200 yds race, a beautiful gold medal. Master Graham haa only been two years at Sb. John's College, and all his good work has been done there.

ST. ANDREW'S COLLEGE.

A social gathering of parents and friends to celebrate the breaking-up of the above College was held lasb evening. His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. J. Holland) presided. The proceedings opened with an exhibition of the quick methods of business arithmetic taught in the College. By way of making the comparison between ordinary high school methods and those of the new school more obvious, the pupils, under the control of Mr T. Horle Giles, principal of the commercial side of the College, were called upon to work in both methods at different blackboards. On one the correct answer in a very few figures was produced almosb instantaneously, while on the other, after 3 or 4 minutes and a. ma3s of figuros, the same ,anawer was laboriously evolved. The answers to questions in the ordinary weights and measurss, percentage, discount, insurance, interesb for any numbor of days at any rate per cent., soft goods warehouso calculations, etc., were in all cases given almoab immediately the questions were written on the black board. In the more involved "problems1 there wiia a delay "jusb long enough to be appreciable. The exhibition was on tho whole a matter of wonder to those unacquainted with the new taethbde,' while to Experts the" results obtained appeared really creditable. After tho work bad been gone through, tea and coffee and light refreshments wore handed round, and the Mayor announced the reeulb of the scholarship examinations as under : 1. Commercial sido, James Pascoe, 71 per cent. 2. Open scholarships. H. Kearin, Mounb Roskill; J. Farroll, Novvton East. In reply to the usual vote of thanks, tho Mayor gave the school great credit for the excellent results shown during tho evening. Mr Charles Ring in seconding the vote of thanks expressed his asbonißhmenb ab the results of a year's work, and ventured to predicb great success in (.ho mercantile world for the pupils of the College. The specimens of handwriting and book-keep-ing, parts of tho general work of the pupils of the College, were much admired. Among those present we noticed Mrs J. J. Holland, the Rev. Canon Nelson, Dr. Beale, Messrs C. Ring, J. Wiseman, and many other prominent citizens. LOWER GLENSIDE. The annual distribution pE prizes in con* nection with Mrs Young's seminary, Lower Glenside, Symonds-streeb, was held yesterday afternoon. Tho Principal presented two scholarships won by Miss M.
