THE VICTORIAN DERBY

It is a far cry to V.R.C. Derby Day, but Auckland turfites ever tako an active interest in the event, and information »nent the likely candidates is always read «Uh interest, Oar best local two-year-olds Tbwe Star and Grenadier, flrnw »a 'He list of entries and so does Brown Mantle. Mf 8. H. Gollan has Bonnie Scotland entered, while Mr S Hordem is repreßented h Fireti Shos (by Nordonfeklt-Lndy -%ah) and threo purchased on his benalt a'.tbe Wellington Park aale. A couple of Auckland breeding also figure in W. «■• name. »Tho Old 'Un thus °«Bcanta on tho chances of tho beat perormed Anatralian candidates :-- Dream*nd, as tho winner of the Maribyrnong Ptat ©. is entitled to hold the position ? f winter iavonrite for tho Darby. Ho »a beautifully bred, being by Trenton, out of a full B i g);er t0 Commotion. Such a combination of blood oughb to produce »j

stayer of the first water. Dreamland ia a big, powerful colfc, and ho won the Plate easily enough from Forward and Dryden. Forward was favourite, bub althoueh he ran an excellent race he hail no chance with the winner. Dreamland is entered by Messrs Bailey and Orr, and no doubt Power will be on his back again, as in tbo Plate. Moorite, who won the Debutante Stakes of the V.A.T.C. Spring Meeting, is the Bort of colt that should grow into a Derby horse. He ia even a better-boned horse than Dreamland, and with ordinary luck will take a heap of beating nexb Spring. Ho is by the same sire as Brewer's Forward, but I think he will prove tho better of the pair and both should give a good account of themselves if they go on well. Cobbity, who won the Nursery Handicap on Cup Day last November, is a favourite of mine ; and Parker, who rode the colt, ha? a high opinion of his capabilites. In this race Destiny ran third, but improved upon this performance considerably when he won the Ascot Vale Stakes last month, beating Bonnie Scotland and Dryden, who has a penchant for running thirds. It will be hard to find a much better brod horse than Destiny, who is out of that grand maro Mortense. Ho ia enterod by Sir T. Elder, who bred him, bub is now the_ property of Mr T. E. BarrSmith. Drydon is an unlucky colt, so far, bub when his temper improves ho may do batter. Ronnie Scotland looks like a D_rby colt, and ho has much more muscle and power than tho averago two-year-olds stripped at the Randwick Meeting. Bradford beat Carlton and Question in the Nursery Handicap on tha third day of the V'.R.C. Autumn Meeting, and he 13 in the St. Albans stablo. Mr Wileon also has the Nordenfeldt—Maid of Honor golding in hla stable. Carlton and Carlsruhe aio two colts owned by Mr T. Hale?, who will probably have a good chance of riding one of his own breeding into a placo in the Dorby. Chesterman and Bellmetal aro ab present in the Newmarkeb stable, which has so often provided ua with tho winter favourite for this race. Ab present they have not shown anything good enough to approach Derby" form. Gaulu3 is in the Warwick Farm stable, along with Consultation, by NiagaraGentility, and threa more, a couple by Niagara and ono by Prodigal. Glenulliu has shown fair form, and Mr Satn Hordarn will probably depend upon Firsb Shot or the colb by Hotchkiss—Onyx. There is every prospect of the next Derby being a good betting race, and if all goes well Dreamland will probably rnmain favourite throughout the winter. Tho four I like be?b are Dreamland, Moorite, Bonnie Scotland and (/obbitcy, and to bring them down to a pair, Dreamland and Moorite.
