AN IMPORTANT PURCHASE.
Messrs Wm. C. Yuille and Co. reporb having purchaaod in England for Air W. R. Wilson the well-known thoroughbred stallion, Bill of Portland, a brown horeo, foaled 1890, by the great St. Simon (aire of L:i Fldcbe, Motnoir, Mrs Butterwick, Raeburn, Semolina, etc), from Electric Light (dam of Maxim, Cigar Light and Petril, all winner*), by Sterling (sireof Isonomy, otc.), from Beachy Head, by Knight of St. Patrick (3iro of Moslem), from Beechnut (sister to Filbort), by Nutwith. Bill of Portland waa a good performer in England. As a two-year-old, he won the Newmarket Bedford Two-year-old Plate of £700, beating seven others. He was second, beaten by a neck by Milford, for the Newmarket July Stakes of £1,810, and second, beaten half a length, for the Stockbridgo Huratbourne Stakes of £947. As a fchreo-year-old he won the Newmarket Heath High Weight Handicap, carrying Bat 91b, boating Mrs Butterwick (winner of the Oaks) and tivo others. He ran second in the Newmarket Flying Handicap Plate, beating ten others, and was placed fourth in the Derby Chataworth Stakes, carrying Sat 101b and beating 12 other?, . The horao 13 now in full training, and Mr Wilson has been advised by Lord Marcus Beresford to allow him to fulfil his English engagements before being shipped in June next. On his arrival in Melbourne he will join Trenton aod the other sires at St. Albane.
