THE AVONDALE MEETING.
Tho Avondale Jockey Club are most unfortunate with regard to the weather. I think that 1 am correct in stating that rain h-iH fallen at; every meeting the Club has huid, and last Saturday proved no exception to tho rule. After tho first two events had been run the rain descended in earnest, ami the Autumn Handicap and Steeplechaso —tho two loading items of the card— were run amidst a perfect downpour. This put tlin course in a very sloppy state. Ie id, unnecessary to say thatracing under these adversa circumstances was anything but of an enjoyable character, and 1 formed oneof a contingent who lefb after the Steeplechase had I'ecr. decided, and wa3 not present to witno.us the unpleasantness which occurred over Bon Godfrey not going to tho post for tlm Waitakorei Handicap in time to start. In the Maiden Plato Mrs J. Lennard »coi«d a well-deserved win with her favourite mare Uorothy. Major Gaorge'a Swifwuro went out favourite, and finished second. This mare is gradually getting 3v3r!.er fiight: ne.=s, and I think Harrison will yot be° lowarded with a win for his perseverance with hor. Only First Nelson, Bon Godfrey and Ida went to the post for the Autumn Handicap, and they jtarted in point of favouritism io the order Written. Quadrant, who, by-the-by, figured in G. W right's name on tho raceDnok, was scratched. Tho accomplished fouri" horseman J. Gallagher had the ■Mount on Ben Uodfroy, and ho rode a iplendid race on the eon of St. Leger. He *epb hia mount in a nice position behind firsts Nelson until tho straight was reached, .Mid having hi* opponent befiton ab the <aii?, won Try three quarters of a length. Salla^her's "riding curao in for a lob of praise after the raco was decided, for he aandled Bon Godfrey with great judgment. Marquis of Tcivkesbucy was in strong «rder for tho Hurdle Race of tho nine '.barters, but. ho gob no nearer than fifth, md the winner turned up in Flukem, who ilso a couple of hours lr.bor pulled off the ateepiochaso. Flukem is in great form now, and ho promises to do Mr J. Hand ■|;ood service during the approaching Steeplechase season. Among tho beaten iivieion was Bombardier, the A K.U Autumn Steeplechase winner. Sunbeam, trained in Ja*. Kean's stable, won the Wnitakerei Handicap, and Brown Mantle, » member of John Chaafc's team, got home first in the Pony Handicap, to tho delight if Ma frionds and brother trainers, in the Joaolnding event of the day, the bhorts Handicap,' Sfc. Kildo, showed some of his old form, and boat Dorothy and three vi.Yew . whom was Brown Mantle. MrHayrwor/^ bard for the success of «» meeting, and Mr V. D. Halstead Slfected capital starts.
