FEDERAL MAIL SERVICE.
RENEWAL OF THE CONTRACT,
London, March 17. Mr Arnold Morley, tho PoßtmasterGeneral, offered the P. and O. and Orient Steamship Companies one year's renewal of the Federal Mail Service to Australia at the present subsidy, with the option of a further renewal for two years on the same terms. This offer, however, was conditional on tho two companies making a reduction in freights for dairy produce from tho colonies. The companies declined the oiler, on the ground that they could not undertake to reduce produce freights, as they were already carrying this clas3 of cargo at a loss. They stated their willingness to renew the contract on the present terms for one year for certain, with the option of extending the term for two additional years until the expiry of the China and Indian contracts. After consideration Mr Arnold Morley decided, to accept the offer of the companies, and the contract will accordingly be renewed on these terms.
