FISH REFUSE.

STATEMENT BY THE HARBOURMASTER.

With refereneo to the depositing of fieh refuse at the Railway Wharf, a communication from Mr Burgees, the chief Harbourmaster, was read at this afternoon's meeting' of the Harbour Board. Mr Burgees abated that a strict) watch was kept to detect an offender for six nights. At 9,30 p.m. on the 12th inst. a spring carb with 2 men was driven on the railway wharf and after a few ninutea the cart wan turned round and was being driven away. The driver of the carb waa Btopped, and the men were questioned as to what they were going to do with tho refuse fiih in the cart._ They answered that ib was going into the cutter Foam, then lying at anchor close to the wharf. The next morning at halfpast six three men shipped a quantity of □eh offal on board the Foam. As no one was detected throwing fish or other refuse into the harbour, and arrangements having been made to carb away the refuse instead of boating it, the temporary nighb watchman had been discharged. The Foreman of Works estimated the cost of constructing a shoot for loading fish offal at £3. He recommended that ib be fixed on the western eido of the Railway Wharf.

The Foreman of Works a|3o stated that alterations had boen made in the building and landing of the fish market. Three of the stalls bad been converted into a stable, and four traps cut in the decking of landing.
