UNIVERSITY COLLEGE COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the above body was held yesterday afternoon, when bhero were presenb: Sir G. M. O'Rorke (Chairman), Mr W. Crowther (Mayor)i Bishop Cowie, Rev. Mr Williams, Miss Edger, and Messrs J.Dihvorbh, G.Peacocko, and Dr. Mackellar.

Lady Onslow's Medals.—The.Chairman stated Lady Onslow had forwarded two medals for nexb year's musical competition. A letter was read from Lady Onslow stating thab ib afforded her groab pleasure to encourage, oven in a small degree, the study of music in this colony. The Council docidud to forward ibß bhankß to Lady Onslow for her donation.

Standing Orders.—Tho Council then dovoted come time to the consideration of Standing Orders. It was amongst other things agreed thab moetings of the Council should be open to the public excepting when ib was decided to go into Committee. The Chairman remarked that he did not know why this practice had arisen in Auckland, because in Parliament ovcry discussion in Committee was open bo tho public. Mr Crowthor said it was a rule that was fast going out as acts of public bodies wore becoming clearer.

Lectukek in Fuench.—Mr Peacocko suggested thab as Mr Moufcalk was teaching French in tho College room, and charging the regular fees, he should be given bho status of a college lecturer. He moved, " Thab Mr Moutalk bo appoinbod lecturer for French." — On the motion of tho Chairman this matter was doferred until next November, as ho considered ib advisable to see whether their finances would aliow of somo salary being attached to tho position. Examiners.— Tho following gontlcmen woro appointed oxaminors .-—French, Mr Monlalk; Gorman, Mr Mitchol Clark (lecturer, Cuntorbury College); general history and political oconoray, Mr Turner ; jurisprudence and constitutional history, Mr Tola.

Annual Examinations,—lt was decided that tho annual examinations should commoneo on tho 2(sth of October.

SICK Lkavk.—Leave of absence for three weeks was granted Profossor Pond, on tho recommendation of Dr. Watson.
