Tub Port Albert School ro-oponed on Monday, after being closed for a fortnight on account of measles, but only nino children out of a roll number of about seventy pub in an appearance, it is exceedingly discouraging to the head tenchor, and also unfair to tho reputation of tho school, that a number of parents send thoir children on the gumfield whon thoy ought to be in school. Tho head teachor has eull'ered severely owing to tho measlos epidomic. The August meeting of tho Port Albert Agricultural Society was held at Mr G. T. Harbnell's on Wednesday. Mr Hartnell addressed tho society on "Fanning and Politics." An interesting discussion followed. Reforenco was nmcio to tho forthcoming elections. Tho president of the Society stated that tho Noxious Weeds Bill was an absurd and entirely unworkable proposal. No farmer in tho colony could comply with its provisions. Messrs .T. Shepherd, R. Walker, G. Thompson aud B. M. Gubb spoke against, not only the Noxious Weeds Bill, but also tho Stock Bill, and the eocretary was instructed to telegraph to R. Thompson, M.H.R., requesting him to oppose both Bills. On Thursday a public meeting was hold to consider the Alcoholic Liquors Salo Bill. Mr Win. He-ford was chairman. Mr T. A. Gubb proposed, and Mr P. L. Bo'croft seconded, and it was unanimously carried, "That the Bill is a retrograde measure and will fail to give that local control over the liquor traffic that the people demanded." Mr C. Judd proposed, and Mrs Hartnell seconded, " Thab tho thanks of tho meeting be given to Sir R. Stout for his able advocacy of tho temperance reform." Carried unanimously. Soveral speakers said thab a measure for bhe control of the liquor traffic would be a prominent plank in tho political platform in November.—tCorrespondent.)
