CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the City Schools Committee was held iast night. Present:-—Messrs J. Blades (Chairman), Farrell, Duncan, Fairs, Sherson and Adams.
Mr C. M. Carter, acting headmaster at the Beresford-streeb School, wrote sending a paper signed by himself and the teachers of thß school relative to a report circulated thab bhediscipline of the school was suffering through tho absence of Mr Harrison. Hesbatedbhab he could only give the lie to such a report; Restated that the upper classes, boys especially, had behaved splendidly, and he could nob express boo strongly his obligations to his colleagues for the way in which they had backed him up, and in several cases had done double duty to prevent any interruption to the usual course of work and discipline. The teaching staff in a joint noto invited the Commibtee. to satisfy themselves by making a surprise visit to the school, ib was resolved thab a letter be senb to Mr Carter stating that the Commibtee were pleased to hear that the discipline of tho school had nob suffered through Mr Harrison's absence.
It was resolved to write to the Board'of Education asking,them to supply an assistant teacher in the Beresford-streeb School in place of Mrs Mayhew, instead of the proposed pupil teacher. Mr B. Crotiin, head-master of the Nelson school, wrobe stating thab tho average attendance at the Nelson-street school for the last two monbhs entitled tha school'to another pupil teacher. The application was referred to the Board of Education to deal with.
-Mr Small, the Truant Officer, reported that Mrs Barnetb intended to return her Bon to the Nelson-street School. ■ ■
The headmaster of the Wellesley-street School askod permission bo light the gas at 3.45 p.m., as ib was too dark to carry on school work ab thab hour. Ho also requested that a curtain be pub in one of bho rooms in the school. Ib was resolved to tiend Mr Worthington'a letter to the Board. Various accounts wero passed for payment. - ■
