OUR FOOTBALLERS.
Although the weather on Saturday last was very moist overhead and sloppy under foot, it did not damp the ardour of our footballers, who appear very eager for the fray this season. There was a large number of players practising at Epsom on Saturday, but the greasy state of the ball prevented a good display of Rugby. The City, Newton, Ponsonby, and Parnell teams indulged in practice matches, and the players seemed well satipfied with their form. Suburbs and Grafton played a match against each other, but neither team had their full strength, and Suburbs were assisted by several of their opponents. The game resulted in a win for tho Grafton team by S points (4 tries) to 5 points (a goal from a try). In the City match, Mr T. Thompson, M.H.R., who takes a groat; interest in outdoor sports, kicked off amidst bhe cheers of the players. Clarence v. Aroha.—The former won this match by 4 points to nil. The score was obtained by Flynn, who potted a goal from tho field.
Terrace v. Victoria.—This match was played on Glenrnore, and after a very exciting game, resulted in a win for Terrace by 9 points. The scorers were : J. Wilson 2 tries, XV. Walker 1, which latter one was converted into a goal by Mens.
Britomakt v. Hobson.—The former won by 10 points to nil. Melrose v. Newton.—The former won by 20 points to nil. Tries were obbained hy Cook (2), Hearling (2), Clarke, Soutter, Marshall, Tobias (1 each), and a goal from the field by A. Gillespie. Otahuhu 11. v. Klerslie 11. — This match was played ab Otahuhu, and resulted in a win for Otahuhu by 14 to nil. Tries were obtained by Donovan (2), Walker (1), Howe (1), two of which were converted by Absolum. City. A very interesting practice match was played between the Seniors and Juniors of the City Football Club on Saturday, in which some good form was shown on both sides, which resulted in a win for the Seniors by six points to three. For the winners, Messrs Poland, Mercer, Pilkington (backs), and Maynard, Cole, Parker, Langton, and Carr (forwards) showed good form ; whilst among bhe Juniors, Hill, Farqubar, Reid, Goldie, and Keeoan (backs), and Symone (2), McLeod, Carlaw, and Downs (forwards) were bo the fore. Clifton v. White Star.—The former won this match by 6 points to nil. The tries were secured by Blincoe, Banks, and Knighb, while Lovetb pobbed a goal from bho field (old rules). The football season was opened ab the Thames on Saturday, where the district scheme hae been adopted the same asm Auckland. Of the matches played, City beat City South by a try, secured by Dare, to nil; and Suburbs beat City Nortoh by six poinbe to nil. The second and third fifteens of the Ponsonby Diebrict Foobball Club are requesbed to meet at bhe All Saints' back c hoolroom bhis evening.
