CRAFTON ROAD SCHOOL.
The annual report to be laid before the Grafton Road householders on Monday evening next was submittod to tlie Board of Education this afternoon. The report states that the school is in a vory satisfactory condition, tho average attendance for 1890 showing a very decided increase on that ot 1889, viz., 482, against 461. It was remarkable, however, that one-fifth of the total number on the roll, 600, are continuously absent from school. Tho financial position of tho school i 3 sound, the accounts up to tho 31et March showing a crorlit balanco of £62. Tho Committee testify to the efficiency of the head teacher, Mr ilealy, and have every reason to be »atish'ed with the rest of the teaching staff. Attention is drawn to the bad state of the playground, and regret is expressed ab " tho injuriously long holidays forced upon the school by the Board." At the standard examination 596 scholars were presented, 30 were absent, 16 accepted, 52 failed and 246 pnssed. The results of the examination generally were considered by the Inspector very satisfactory, except in Standard 4, much of tho work in arithmetic and grammar being very poor. The Commmittee attribute this circumstance to the actiun of the Board in giving this class three different teachers during the year.
