Mr Vincent Pyke, Dunedin, is suffering from nervous paralysis of the right arm, which is quite useless to him. It is understood that Sergennt-Major Fair, late of the Wellington police, and now stationed on tho West Coast, has received notice from the Government that he is one of those retrenched.

Mr Robert Fenwick, who has been 22 yearswith Arthurßriscoe and Co., Dunedin, and has for many years occupied responsible positions with the firm, has accepted the oiler of managership of T. and S. Morrin and Co's hardware business in Auckland.

Mr H. S. McKellar, Inspector of Customs, has obtained twelve months' loave of absence, and left Lytbelton on Saturday last by the Rimutaka for England. During his absence his duties will be undertaken by Mr W. T. Glasgow, Collector of Customs at Wellington.

On Tuesday, April 14th, Sir George Grey reached his seventy-ninth birthday, and in honour of the event tho Liberal Association, through their secretary, Mr William Jennings, forwarded the following cablegram to the veteran statesman who is still in Sydney :—" On behalf of the Auckland Liberal Association, wish you many happy returns of the day, and safe to Now Zealand in improved health." Mr John Roas, of the firm of Sargood, Son, and Ewen, arrived here by the steamer Takapuna. on March 28, rarowfoforEngland, from which he has been absent for about thirty years. He is accompanied by Mrs Ross and Miss Ross. Mr Ross has been a resident of Dunedin for many years, bub ho is also well known in Auckland, with which he is probably as familiar as with any other part of the colony, and wherever he may be his genial qualities and numerous friends ensure for him a most oordial reception. Prior to hie departure from Dunedin. Mr Ross was presented by the employees of the firm of Sargood, Son, and Ewen, with a handsome illuminated address expressing the esteem and goodwill in which he has been held by them during his many years' connection with the firm. Mr, " Mrs, and Miss Ross lefb by the Monowai last trip en route for England. They carry with them the good wishes of their hosts of friends in Auckland for an enjoyable trip and a safe and early return to this colony.
