LICENSING ELECTIONS.

The Groymouth licensing election yesterday resulted in the return of all the moderate candidates.

Tho prohibitioniets' candidates were badly boaton at the Avon (Christchuch suburban) Licensing Committee election yesterday.

At Roslyn, Dunodin (yesterday) in tho licensing elections, five members of the prohibition party were elected. Thoy intend to close tho three hotels in the district.

Tho licensing elections ab Wanganui on April 16 resulted in a return of threo candidates put forward by the prohibitionist party, who pledge themselves to close five of tho nineteen hotels in tho borough.

The Dunedin local option licensing poll resulted in a majority against the increase of publican's licensos by 483 ; against wine, 451; against accommodation, 467 ; against bottle, 423. There were no lots than 273 votes rejected as informal.

Tho Napier licensing committee elections resulted in tho re-election of all tha old committees in the town. Tho teetotal nominees were defeated by largo majorities. The voting was almost unanimously against a ny incroaeo of licenses of any kind.

Messrs McGowan.Gillospio, Wosb, Butlor, and Thorburn havo booneloctedfor Hastings (Thames) licensing district. All aro moderate candidates. The local option poll resulted in a majority of four votes againßt •an increase of publicans' licenses, and voting re accommodation licenses was equal.

Tho temperance party are working up Ponsonby Ward with the intention of again contesting tho licensing elections on prohibition lines. It is also arranged that the standard of prohibition will be raised in tho city with a view to placing all the houses on the same footing.

The Sydenham (Chriatchurch) licensing election resulted in a decieivo victory for the prohibitionistß, who pub in all their nominees for the committee by a largo majority. As theyhavo announced their intention of closingall tho public-housesin Sydenham, there was great oxcitement. Both parties worked desperately. The candidates returned :—Rev. L. M. Isitb, 669 ; G. G. Smith, 637 ; W. J. Rudd, 635; J. Hoppor, 632 ; Beattie, 625. The highest of tho moderate party's candidates was W. White, sen., 425. 1,122 electors voted oub of 1,550 on the roll.

The liconsing election for Dunedin city caused unusual interest on April 17th. The result was:—Moderates : R. S. Sparrow, 739; Gonsley, 732; Myers, 730 ; McGregor, 703 ; Stanford, 702. Prohibitionists : liarr, 685 ; Rady, 675 ; Bege, 672 j Broad, 670 ; Bright, 663. A largo crowd assembled ab the declaration, but would listen bo no speochos..
