DEPARTMENTAL RETURNS.

The beer duty for the year was £58,030, giving a surplus of £4,030. The receipts for last month were £5,417, as against £5,374 for the same month last year. Auckland contributed £I,ISO ; Wellington, £578; Christchurcb, £1,013 ; Dunedin, £1,237.

Tho following is a complete list of the value of the imports and exports of the port of Auckland for tho quarter ended March 31st last:—lmports : From United Kingdom, £287,377 : from British possessions, £96,725; from foroign countries, £38,685: total, £422,787. Exports:— New Zealand products : To United Kingdom, £177,655; to British possessions, £123,220; to foreign countries, £98,701. Foreign products: To United Kingdom, £2,799 ;to British possessions, £9,480; to foreign countries, £6,235 : total £418,090.

The Customs duty for March was £122,713 against £123,607 for March, 1890, and £146,501 in February. The principal ports wore :—Auckland, £29,158 ; Wellington, £23,840 ; Christchurch, £20,825 ; Dunedin, £25,715. The receipts for the year were £1,527,233, giving a surplus above the cstimato of £74,733. In his statement published in January Sir Harry Atkinson estimated the surplus at £89,000, based on anticipated receipts of £400,000 during the first three months of this year. The receipts have not boon up to expectation. Last month it was expected the duties of the Rimutaka's cargo would have come in, but owing to tho holidays thoy wore not collected.

Tho Postal J)opaitment have prepared a reiurn shewing the increaso of letters despatched and received from Home under the reduced rate of postage as compared with the mails sent under the old rate. In January, 1890, 38,404 lebbsrs were despatched as against 43,283 in January, 1891. in February, 1890, 35,079 against 45,374 in February. 1891. In March, 1890, 36,977 against 37,587 in March, 1891. Total tor tho first three months of 1890 110,460 letters as against 126,244 for the lirab quarter of this year. The increase is 15,734, bub allowing for a nominal increaao of 4,418. incroaso under reduced rate is 11,366, or abonb JO'S per cent. The letters received from Homo were January, 1890, 44,507 ; January, 1891, 47,871 ; February, 1890, 42,641 ; February, 1891, 45,905. Total for the first two months of 1890, 87,148 ; first two months 1891, 91,776. Incroaso, 4,628. Allowing for a nominal increase of 3,484, tho increaso under the reduced rate is 1,144 letters, or 1-31 per cont.
