FURTHER RETRENCHMENT.
JUSTICE AND EDUCATION DE PARTMENTS.
THE PUHIPUHI BATTERY. (BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
Wellington, this day. The alterations in the Justice Department include placing the District Courts in the South Island under one Judge instead of two. The second Judge will be employed in another capacity. There will be some re-arrangement and one or two reductions in the Magistracy. The total saving in salaries will be £3,000. About £2,000 will be saved on extraneous expenses. The Minister believes still further Baying can eventually be made, without dismissing or reducing anyone.
_ There will bo no retrenchment in education, bub by the exercise of prudence it is hoped to keep the vote under that of last year's after allowing for the annual increase of children. The expenditure on native schools will be kept within limits, and the Minister proposes to introduce a Bill giving the Education Department power to hand these schools over to the Education Boaide from time to time on such terms as may be agreed upon. The Minister considers the time has arrived when the Maoris ought to make reserves for their schools as tho Europeans havo done.
Judge Ward will have charge of the district courts in the South Island. Judge Broad's services will be retained in other capacities in the Nelson district.
Mr 'Seddon was to have left for Auckland to-morrow, bub has received a subpoena in a charge against Capbain Falconer which may delay him bill Tuesday. He opens bhe battery at the Puhipuhi field next month, and will visit the Otago goldfields.
