THE ESCAPED FRENCH CONVICTS.

GASPARINI AND CURY AGAIN

BEFORE THE COURT.

The two escapees from New Caledonia, Gasparini and Cnry, appeared before Dr« Giles, R.M., at the Police Court to-day.

Mr Hudson Williamson, on behalf of tho Crown, applied for a further remand until he received fuller information.

His Worship asked if Mr Williamson could tell him what communications the. authorities had received, and how they wero received.

Mr Williamson handed in a telegram received from the Government upon the matter.

Mr Napier, who appeared for Cury, wished to know the contents of the documents handed into Court.

His Worship said that it was information given by the French Consul, the head of the Police Department, that furbher time would be required.

Mr Napier said that it would require evidence to connect these men with some crime. It was the practice in ordinary cases of ext'adition to adduce some evidence of a well-grounded suspicion. He thought that the evidence of the mate of the vessel by which these men were picked up did not in any way connecb his client with any offence whatever. He considered that it was only fair that some evidence should be given. It was not sufficient that some gentleman in Wellington supposed, but not yet proved to be the representative of the French Republic, had said something about these men to the Government.

His Worship pointed out that they were cutoff to a great extent from the place where these men were supposed to have come from and where the offence was alleged to have been committed, therefore they must allow some time. He had before him a document from His Excellency the Governor, in which it was alleged that an application had been made for the extradition of the prisoners.

Mr Napier said that justified their deten tion. bub not their repeated remands.

His Worship remanded the prisoner for eight clear days. The other cases against Gasparini were lso remanded.
