BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.

After the ordinary business had been trans acted at the City Schools Committeo meet. ing last evening, some discussion took place reference to efforts now being made to introduce Bible - reading in the State schools. Mr Farrell introduced the question by drawing attention to the recent discussion in the Diocesan Synod, and ho thought it remarkable that the clergy had taken a stand for denominational education and .that the laity were against it. Ho believed this state of things would assist the opponents of tho present system of education to gain their ends, and he thought the Committee should express their disapprobation of anything that would poinb in that direction. Mr Blades was of opinion that the Committee could take no action in the matter, and Mr Gorrie agreed that no action could be taken at present. He thought, however, that if there was any prospect of a bill being introduced in the direction of denominational education or Bible-reading, the Committeo could call a public meeting of householders to deal with the matter. There would, he said, no doubt be a great contest on those questions in the near future. Mr Crowther thought that the opponents of tho present system of education gob little encouragement in the Synod, but Mr Farrell contended that substantial encouragement was given, at all even's by the clergy. Some further discussion took place, bub no resolution was come to in the matter.
