DEAD BODY FOUND.
About six o'clock this morning information was conveyed to Constable Martin, who was on duty in Queen-street, that the body of a man was floating in the harbour near tinRailway Wharf. Constable Marbin, assisbod by Constables Mackie and McDonald, proceeded to the Railway Wharf, and there saw the body of a man floating upright in the waber near the sbern of bhe s.s. Richmond. They speedily secured the body and conveyed ib to bhe morgue. Ib had apparently been in the waber for aboub ten days, and the face was a good deal discoloured. There is a small punctured wound in bhe neck. The following is a description of deceased:—About 30 years of age, 5 feet Gins, high, black hair, whiskers and moustache ; dressed in dark tweed coat and vest, striped moleskin trousers. During the morning the deceased was identified by Mrs Conner, who keeps a boarding-house in Customs-sbreeb. She stabes that the deceased had been staying at her place for three weeks, bub she does not know bis name. On Thursday the 23rd June the deceased paid her for his bed and board, ancl told her that he would not require a bed that night, because he was going to .be hung. Mrs Conner told him ..not to talk like that, when lie replied, ".Woman, they'll hang you for nothing." Deceased then left the houso, returned about 8 p.m., and went to bed. At about 5 p.in.on the following day she saw deceased walking up and down hi front of the house undshedid not see him alive afterwards. She missed him at 0 p.m. because he did not come for his tea as usual. She found his clothes made up in a swag, as if read y for lemoval. Mrs Conner says deceased was sober and sho cannot account for his drowning.
