London, August 30th.—Mr Strangways, formerly Premier of South Australia, will embark for Adelaide in October next. Colonial Oranges in London. A consignment of 250 cases of braDgoe sent from Australia arrived hi good condition, and are selling at 10s per case, but itis suggested that itwould bo advantageous if the fruit were wrapped in paper. Tno Bishopric of Melbourne. Rev. G. Außtin, rector of Whitby, in tho North riding of Yorkshire, in response to a communication from tho Committee of gentlemen appointed to select a Successor to Dr, Moorhouee, has intimated his Willingness to accept the vacant position. Queensland Goldmining. A company has been privately floated to work the Day Dawn Goldmine at Charter's Towers, in Queensland, Applications for shares represented i' 50,000 in excess of the capital required. A Colonial Governor Ccnsurod. Tho serious differences which have existed for some time between Sir John Pope Hennessey, Governor of Mauritius, and Mr Clifford Lloyd, have engaged the attention of the Right Hon. Edward Stanhope, and tho matter will receive further consideration at his hand ; but in tho meantime, and pending a final decision, he has censured Sir John Pope Hennesoy and removed Mr Lloyd to tho Seychelles Islandß, dependencies of Mauritius. Mr Gladstone's Homo Rule Pamphlet. Mr Gladstone has issued a pamphlet on tho Homo Rule question, in which he justifies his action in having concealed his views from his colleaguos in tho Cabinet until the matter was ripe for public consideration. Ho admits, howevor, that it is necessary that the land purchase and Home Rule questions should be dealt with separately. English Tax on Hops. A rumour is in circulation (the authenticity of which, however, is seriously dnubted) to the effect that Lord Randolph Churchill, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, intends to submit a proposal for the imposition of a duty on foreign hops— the colonial articles to be etill admitted ree.
