FOOTBALL NOTES.

Tin; captain of the Wellington football team which recently visited Auckland appears at last to be ashamed of the ungentlomanly conduct of himself and comrades, which called dowh upon them tho ecorn and contempt of overy manly footballer, and practically indoed of every honourablo_ person in tho colony. Speaking at the dinner to tho Now South Wales men, Mr Cooper said the Wellington team were not responsible for the strictures passod upon the Auckland umpire, and from inquiries made ho had ascortoinod that tho I'oneke Football Club disclaimed any knowledge of the elligy which had boon hung from the gymnasium It is not desirable to prolong tho discussion on tho subject, but it is a pity that he should bo allowed to crawl out of tho holo into which ho placed himself, unless ho can do so truthfully. Mr Cooper ie well aware that before his team left Auckland telegrams were sont to Wellington by his mon, assorting that the match was lost through the untairuoss of tbe Auckland umpiro. Not only so, but upon the arrival of tho team at Wellington whaif, Mr Coopej; and his mon made similar and, in fact, more unfair statements, and sovoral of them even joined in tho groans for Mr Cotter. Tbo effigy oxplunation is a very poor ono. If tho Poneko Club was not rosponsiblo for tho hanging of tho effigy, tho membora of it were. The elligy hung from its gibbet at itho l'oneke gymnasium noarly 4S hours, and during that timo tho gymnasiun was in use by tho mombers. It is satisfactory to know that tho Wellington men possess some remnants of a sonso of ebamo, and tboir attempt to hido their own conduct from the ecorn of their follows by untruth proves this to be tho case. Tho Nelson Football Club, the winners of the Junior Cup for this season, wero tbo recipients on Saturday of a handsome satin banner, tho colour being black and whito hoops with gold fringe, and tho letters "N.F.C." artistically worked across tho contre It was preßentod to tho Club by Mr R. Baxter, on behalf of Miss Baxter.of Ponsonby. The Captain, Mr J. Fisbor, suitably responded for tho gallant donor, and three hoarty cheers wore givon oiijhor bohalf. A football match, butchers v. publicans, will tako place at Newmarkot Ground on Wednoeday next, and is causing a good doal of interest amongst persons connected with theso callings. A charge of sixpence admission will bo mado, and ladies will be admitted to the ground free. In the evening the representatives of '"beef" and " boer" will dine togethor at Robson's Commercial Dining Rooms.

Thames, this day. — Great interest is takon here in the forthcoming football matoh with the Grafton Club, which it is understood will be played at the Parawai Gardens on Saturday, 11th instant. A meeting of local footballers was hold on Saturday night, when tho necessary arrangements were mado for tho match, and it was decided to entertain tbe visitors at a dinner.
