BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The usual meeting of the Board was held this afternoon in the Victoria Arcade. Present: Messrs S. Luke (chairman), J. M. Lennox, D. Goldie, J. C. Carr, J, Upton. Udy Moat, and J. M. Clark.

Tho report of tho Visiting Committee of the Training College recommended that Mr G. A. Worsley be admitted as a student, and the application of Misees E. D. Murray and Quinn would be considered at tho end of the year. The report was adopted. A letter was received from the Minister of Education intimating that he is quite unable to concent to any expenditure on ropairsand painting, out of money, granted from the proceeds of Public Works loans. He will deem it necessary to deduct from amounts due by way of capitation allow ; ance an equivalent for any sum taken from a building grant for any other purchase than ono of those recognised in circular 3,614. Resolved that the department be informed ttiat the Board had already anticipated this instruction.

A letter was read from "Mr G- Yon der Hyde atating that he would be glad if the Board of Education would alter their time of oxamination so that the scholars might join on the Ist day of February term. The lettor was received.

A lengthy letter was read from Professor Brown regarding the apparatus for teaching sciences, stating that be found a great willingness on the part of the students to learn elementary science, but he was retarded for the want of proper apparatus to teach science. He suggested that the Board should provide a stock, and offered, Bhould tae Board see fit to set aside £100 for the purpose ho would bo prepared to supply a list of articles wanted.

The Chairman said that they must all admit the necessity of come such provision. Ho would therefore move that Professor Brown be thanked for his suggestion, and that a sum not exceeding £100 should bo set aside, and that Professor Brown bo requested to furnish the list as offered. After some discussion the letter was referred to the Training College Visiting Committee, which consisted ef the whole Board, co consider and report. Nelson-street School.—Tbo Committeo of the above school wrote stating that tho asphalting in the playground needed attention, at a cost of about £9.—Resolved that the application be granted. Cambridge West. — This Committee wrote asking for a grant of £12 for the purpose of fencing in a section adjoining the school : Application granted subject to condition that the work be let by tender, and that the land be ploughed and put down in grass.
