The Sculling Sweepstakes.
Beach's Victory.
London, September 1 ■ In the final heat for the great sculling sweepstakes Boach bad an easy victory over Teemer, winning by over a hundred yards. Beach took the lead, sculling at high pressure speed, Teemer being nowhere. Beach stepped at Mortlake and waved his cap. The course was from Putney to Mortlake, and the race was witnessed by an immense crowd.
The latest great victory of William Beach, champion sculler of the world, in his defeat of six groat oarsmen viz., John Teemer, Wallace Roes, George Perkins, Neil Matterson, George Bubear, and Lee, is an event of which Australia may well foel proud. His great victory over Edward Hanlan, the renowned Canadian, who previously was declared invincible, gave Beach the welldeserved prominence which be now holds. Naturally enough, he entered upon his most rectnt contest as a favourite, being backed to win at 100 to 9i>, and he has realised the fondest hopes of his admirers. In two heats, first against Lee and second against Bubear, Beach appears to have won as he pleased. In the "final" between himself and Teemer, who, by the way, Hanlan believed was the "coming oarsman," the Australian champion is said to have " taken the lead, sculling at high pressure speed, Teemer being nowhere." Indeed, Beach appears to have adopted Hanlan's tactics of rowing his man out in the first hundred yards, and he was evidently in no way pressed by Teemer, for he is reported to have stopped at Mortlake and waved his cap, eventually winning by a hundred yards. It now only remains for William Beach to win his match with Jacob Oaudaur on the 18th of the present month, when he can claim to have beaten all the greatest scullers of the world; Gaudauris undoubtedly America's best oarsman, and au he very recently beat Teemor it is difficult to say how he will come off in his contest against Beach, which is for £500 a-eido and the championship of the world. A leading New York sporting journal says of Gaudaur : —
" Time is a danger light for any champion, and it is doubtful whether thore is a man in the world who could equal, let alone beat the performance. Time is no criterion of oarsmanship, we are well aware ; but it must be acknowledged, when a man rows a trial on a river or lake in 19min. 27sec, that he can repeat the feat within lOsec. any time in smooth water, so that by this theory Gaudaur is a worthy candidate to back against Beach or anybody else."
