Successful Trial of Auckland Cartridges.

nition was mado at tho lillo range yesterday afternoon in presonco of Major Minnett, Captains Coleman, Messenger and Marshall, Lioutonant Vogol, and Mr E, T. Cillon (" Evening Post") Captain Whitney, manufacturer of the ammunition, explained that tho best samples of cartridges sent from Auckland to Wellington had by some mistake not been sent to tho range, but a previous sample substituted. Tho conditions of trial were : Ton shots at .100 yards ; second cla°s targots ; rapidity of firing. Lieut. Vogol, who won tho Spencer Cup at tho Wimblodon meeting, tired with English-manufactured ammunition, and Captain Whitney used his own, both firing with strango rifles. Liout. Vogol took lmin 35s.ee, making 2 bull's eyes, 5 centres, .'1 outers : total, 20 Captain Whitney took lmin. 1 Usees,, scoring 5 bull's-eyes, 2 centres, 3 outers ; total, 32. It had beon intended to mako a further trial at 500 yards, but tho rain interfered. All tho gontlomon present expressed themselves sutisfiod with tho ammunition, both for accuracy and rapidity of firing.
Tho weather was bitterly cold. Snow and hail fell this morning.
