New Zealand Smelting Co.

A report by tho assayer of the Now Zealand Smelting Company that tho bullion was rising satisfactorily and that it had reached 22 ounces of gold and 35 ounces of silver per ton has set the tongues of gossips wagging. As our readers are doubtless aware, the quartz.'at present undergoing treatment at the company's furnace comprises parcels purchased from tho Crown G.M. Co. ana othor mines. Some 50 or 60 tons wero purchasod from the Crown Company at £814s per ton, and on tho assumption that only tho Crown stutr has been treated in tho furnace, a very general opinion has been formed that tho Smelting Company's assay very much undervalued the Crown quartz. Mr Mcnzies, secretary to tho Smelting Company, who wns interviewed on tho matter this morning, points out that besides tho Crown quartz his company purchased high-priced parcels from other mines, viz., the ltoso and the Kenihvorth, and states tliat probably tho assayer has treated tho more prolific quartz first. Mr Adam Porter. Chairman of the Crown directors, and who is also a director of tho Smelting Company, seems inclined to discredit the statement that the Crown quarUs was much undervalued. However, at tho cleaning up it will bo scon how tho yields correspond with the assays. We trust that for the satisfaction of tho public the Smelting Company will make public full details of tho present smelting.
